Abstract
Coping flexibility refers to the ability to change goals and strategies of coping depending on the situation while considering consequences of coping behavior. The purpose of the study was to validate the Coping Flexibility Questionnaire (COFLEX; Vriezekolk et al., 2012) and to examine the relationship between coping flexibility and general coping strategies. A total of 461 Korean adults completed self-report measures of coping flexibility (i.e., COFLEX, FGAS, CFS), cognitive flexibility, depression/anxiety symptoms, life satisfaction, and general coping. The COFLEX had a good reliability and validity. Contrary to the two-factor structure of the original scale, the results of factor analysis supported the three-factor structure of the COFLEX with the factors of perceived coping repertories, reflective coping, and flexible coping behavior. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated an adequate fit for the three-factor structure of the COFLEX in a Korean sample. In relationships of coping flexibility and general coping strategies, the COFLEX was positively associated with problem focused coping and positive reframing and acceptance, and was not significantly associated with emotion expression and seeking social support. In addition, maladaptive coping strategies such as mental and behavioral disengagement was negatively associated with the reflective coping factor of the COFLEX only. These findings indicated that individuals with high coping flexibility tend to use adaptive cognitive, behavioral coping strategies, but did not support they tend to use adaptive emotional coping or are less likely to use maladaptive coping. In conclusion, the Korean version of the COFLEX is a valid measure of coping flexibility for Korean adults.
